Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident.

The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.

To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases.

Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.

But now an American dermatology expert who flew out to Dede's home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life.

After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts.

The virus was therefore able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on his hands and feet.

Dede's counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus.

But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede's immune condition was something far rarer and more mysterious.

Warts aside, he had enjoyed remarkable good health throughout his life - which would not be expected of someone with a suppressed immune system - and neither his parents nor his siblings have shown signs of developing lesions.

"The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," Dr Gaspari told the Telegraph.

Dr Gaspari, who became involved in the case through a Discovery Channel documentary, believes that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been shown to arrest the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

"He won't have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands," Dr Gaspari said.

"Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life."

The most resilient warts could then be frozen off and the growths on his hands and feet surgically removed.

Dr Gaspari hopes to get the necessary drugs free of charge from pharmaceutical firms. They would then be administered by Indonesian doctors under his supervision.

Still intrigued by the origins of Dede's peculiar immune condition, the doctor would like to fly him to the United States for further examination, but fears the financial and bureaucratic barriers would prove too difficult to overcome.

Flipping upside down at 500 miles per hour is just another weekend activity for members of the Patriots Jet Team.

The former fighter pilots and current commercial pilots who make up the only civilian-owned and operated aerobatic team in America will soar into San Francisco as part of this year's Fleet Week celebration, which kicks off today and runs through Monday.

After retiring as a pilot for United Airlines, Randy "Howler" Howl, owner and president of the team, purchased the first Patriots demonstration aircraft in 1999 from an Air Force stockpile in Europe.

"My passion has always been formation aerobatics and I got the idea to start a team similar to the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds, but on the civilian side," Howl said.

According to David Ringler, chief operations officer for the Patriots Jet Team, all the pilots and ground crew have regular jobs outside of being team members.

"We're really just a family; no one's paid and we're all volunteers," Ringler said. "We do our regular jobs during the week but on the weekends we fly these planes. Typically the pilots are former fighters and they just want to get their paws on something fast and fun to fly."

Flying decommissioned MiG-17 and L-39 fighter jets, the Patriots Jet Team does maneuvers that even the infamous Navy Blue Angels can't accomplish, including the "Tail Slide," which involves flying vertically upward until running out of energy, then sliding backwards tail first, slowing to a speed of 50 knots, Howl said.

San Francisco's Fleet Week is the last air show in which the Patriots Jet Team will be a four-ship demonstration team. With help from its sponsors, Fry's Electronics and Hotwire Construction Company, the Patriots will become the first six-ship demonstration team owned and operated by civilians, Howl said.

Also in 2011, the currently for-profit organization will be converting into a nonprofit 501-3c foundation with the goal of promoting aviation careers to the youth of America, Howl said.

"As a child, I had a passion for aviation, but I didn't know anybody in the aviation field that could give me guidance," Howl said. "Once I broke through the outer shell, I met a lot of experienced aviators that helped me fulfill my dream and I want to do the same for those young, up-and-coming aviators that have their own dreams."

Within the next 60 days, Howl said, the group will be breaking ground on a 35,000-square-foot educational facility and aviation museum at Byron Airport in Contra Costa County, where the Patriots Jet Team is based.

London's runways are typically a launch pad for newbies. In seasons past, Kirsi Pyrhonen, Julia Nobis, and Tati Cotliar all made their catwalk breakthrough via the Big Smoke's innovative shows. This season proved to be another story.

New Jersey's Kirby Kenny had a strong showing, opening for Erdem and House of Holland and closing for Sass & Bide. Runway fixture Lisanne de Jong hit it big this week when she opened for Burberry, while Burberry Beauty face Nina Porter closed out the show in the most memorable way possible. Good ol' Aggy opened for Giles, but it was the show's closer, the legendary 71-year-old Veruschka von Lehndorff, who takes the crown. Giles Deacon has a habit of dragging out some of fashion's most iconic faces for his shows, but booking Veruschka was easily his most impressive casting coup to date. See all of London's top openers and closers in the slideshow ahead.

By now we've all heard about the new Brett Favre drama, and in case you haven't I'll break it down. Favre allegedly spent some of his time with the New York Jets attempting to seduce then Jets sideline reporter Jenn Sterger. Its important to note that there is no real proof that Favre took place in any of this.

Its impossible to know if Favre was actually involved in this incident, only Brett can know if it was truly him. What we can speculate on however, is how this grouped with the Vikings early struggles, and Favre's ankle injury will effect his on the field play.

Favre has proved that he can play through pain, starting 312 straight games and counting. Favre has taken the field with broken fingers, bum ankles, and every imaginable pain in between the two.

Brett has also taken the field in adversity that is more serious than this. The day after his father passed away in December of 2003 Brett Favre made the tough decision to take the field. Not only did he take the field that day, he took out all of his emotions on the Raiders. Favre threw for 4 first half touchdowns leading the Packers to a 41-7 on Monday Night Football.

However, this is a different kind of adversity that Favre is potentially playing through. Ask Tiger Woods what strains on your Marital situation will do to your game, because they sure threw Tigers game into shambles. If Brett knows he didn't do it and can assure his wife that he didn't then he'll be completely fine on the field. However if Deanna doesn't believe him you better believe that it will hold his game back a little bit. Favre is sure to know that family is more important than he football game could ever be.

Regardless of the validity of these rumors, Brett will jog onto the field in New York on Monday night. Maybe the addition of Randy Moss will help him temporarily forget his struggles.
