The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has been named the greatest horror movie ever by scary movie masters.

Total Film canvassed leading directors and stars from the horror world to find their favourite, with vintage shockers winning out.

The low-budget Massacre film - released in 1974 and directed by Tobe Hooper - was for many years banned as a "video nasty" following a furore about horror films being available on video.

But by the late 1990s it was given a video certificate and went on to be shown on TV in the UK.

Directors such as John Carpenter, Wes Craven, John Landis, George Romero, Guillermo del Toro and Eli Roth were among those who cast their votes.

On-screen talents - most of them characters who have been masked - including Robert Englund (Freddy), Kane Hodder (Jason), Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface) and Doug Bradley (Pinhead) also took part in the poll for the November edition.

The Massacre movie - apparently inspired by a real story - sees five young Americans stumbling across a dilapidated house inhabited by a family of cannibals.

The Exorcist from 1973 was runner-up in the list, with Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho - from 1960 - ranked third.

Carpenter's The Thing, made in 1982, was the most recent film to make the top ten.

Jamie Graham, deputy editor of Total Film, said: "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is essentially an old dark house tale fitted with mallets, meat hooks and power tools. We see nothing, feel everything, the aggressive camera, brutal editing, clanging sound design and grainy, grubby visuals striking home like a sledgehammer to the skull."

Have you watched the sneak peek or checked out the photos of this episode? The title of the episode is "Supergirl." It airs on Friday October 8 at 8pm on the CW. You can read all our coverage of Smallville here.

Episode Synopsis: SMALLVILLE "Supergirl" Season 10 Episode 3 – Clark (Tom Welling) is stunned when Kara (guest star Laura Vandervoort) returns to Earth and tells him Jor El sent her to stop the dark force that is coming because he doesn't believe Clark can handle it. Meanwhile, Lois (Erica Durance) confronts Gordon Godfrey (guest star Michael Daingerfield), a shock jock radio DJ who has been crusading against heroes, after he threatens the Green Arrow (Justin Hartley). However, after Godfrey is possessed by the dark force, he takes Lois hostage and Clark and Kara have to come to her rescue. Mairzee Almas directed the episode written by Ann Cofell Saunders.

Season one sees the introduction of the regular cast, and storylines which regularly included a villain deriving a power from kryptonite exposure; the one-episode villains were a plot device developed by Gough and Millar. The first season primarily dealt with Clark trying to come to terms with his alien origins, and the revelation that his arrival on Earth was connected to the deaths of Lana's parents. After the first season, the series used fewer villain-of-the-week episodes, focusing more on story arcs which affected each character and explore Clark's origins. Main story arcs include: Clark's discovery of his Kryptonian heritage; the disembodied voice of Clark's biological father Jor-El is introduced, communicating to Clark via his space ship, setting the stage for plots involving the fulfillment of Clark's earthly destiny; Clark seeking out three Kryptonian stones, at the instruction of Jor-El, which contain the knowledge of the universe and form his Fortress of Solitude; Clark battling Brainiac in his attempts to release the Kryptonian criminal General Zod; other escaped Phantom Zone criminals Clark must either capture or destroy; the arrival of Clark's biological cousin Kara; and Lex finally discovering Clark's secret. The eighth season features storylines involving the introduction of Davis Bloome, who is Smallville's interpretation of Doomsday, and a woman named Tess Mercer to replace the exit of Lex Luthor from the series. Justin Hartley reprises his role as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, being upgraded to a series regular. With the ninth season, "Major" Zod (Callum Blue), along with other members of Zod's military group, are revived by Tess Mercer, though without their Kryptonian powers. Their efforts to obtain those powers becomes the central conflict for the season's story arc.

Don't wait for the expiration of that link because it will only be offered for a matter of time. You better watch it now and experience another wonder episode of Smallville.WATCH SMALLVILLE Season 10 Episode 3 "Supergirl" now!
