The sixth season premiered on Monday August 16, 2010 at 10ET/PT on Showtime. In May 2010, Elizabeth Perkins (Celia Hodes) announced that she will be leaving the series. Linda Hamilton joined the cast as Nancy's new supplier (albeit for a short time). It was also announced that Mark-Paul Gosselaar will make an appearance, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alanis Morissette will reprise their roles, and Richard Dreyfuss will appear in at least four episodes. The season premiere was leaked on August 1, 2010.

Picking up immediately where the season five finale concluded, season six finds the Botwin family fleeing north in the wake of Shane's killing of Pilar. Requiring a larger car, the family drives to their former house in Ren Mar to use Audra's. When they arrive, Nancy finds Audra and Andy stalked by an anti-abortion protester holding a cross bow. Reluctantly, Audra splits with Andy because he fled her for about five minutes. With nowhere else to go, Andy joins the family's road run.

Being unable to cross the Canadian border without the baby's birth certificate, Nancy, Andy, Silas, Shane and Stevie assume new identities as "The Newmans" (as Nathalie, Randy, Mike, Shawn and Avi, respectively) and settle in Seattle. Nancy, Andy and Silas take menial jobs as scab labor at a local hotel, where Nancy discovers the resident drug dealer to be on strike. Seeing an opportunity to fill that void, she seeks out a local distributor (Hamilton) and, realizing she does not have enough money to buy much marijuana, she instead buys up the seller's about-to-be-discarded trimmings and produces hashish, using the hotel's laundry equipment.

Meanwhile, dishwasher Andy spars with the scornful hotel's chef (Peter Stormare) as he tries to prove his culinary talents, eventually earning a promotion to sous chef. Bellhop Silas swallows his pride and agrees to read—in his underwear—to a guest who tips generously. Emasculated, he goes in search of a girl to sleep with, and finds one at a local college campus. Finding a sense of self-worth and acceptance among his new friends on campus—who presume him to be a fellow student—Silas decides to audit some classes. While the rest of the family works, Shane babysits Stevie. Back in southern California, Esteban tasks Cesar and Ignacio with finding Nancy and bringing back his son (Stevie). While looking for clues at the Ren Mar house, they encounter Doug and coerce him into helping find the Botwins.

When Shane joins a "Mommy group", he makes up a fictional story and alleges that "Avi" is his offspring while Avi's mother died in the Iraq war, which means he lives with his mother, an alcoholic maid. One of the ladies from the group contacted her brother-in-law who works for the state and said he, the baby, nor his mother's name was listed in their files. The women told Shane to tell them the truth, otherwise, they threatened to contact the Child Protection Services. This led to Shane replying in a scornfully vulgar language. Later on, agency officers come to the family's apartment and ordered to see the baby, to which Andy walks out of the shower nude, while holding the baby in his arms.

Andy asks Nancy to romantically free him, as he knows he has no power to do so. He begs her to tell him it will never happen, to which she replies with a roundabout and inconclusive answer. As Nancy and Andy begin to leave the weed dealer's house, they are caught out front by two police officers from the state due to a parking violation made by Silas, resulting in the family attempting to flee again. Cesar and Ignacio receive a phone call from the cop about the parking violation made by Silas, to which they find out where the family has relocated to. In the latter, Nancy finds Doug tied up in his car and she runs into her apartment and tries to gather the family together to escape. After a series of problems amount, Nancy discovers via cell phone that Cesar and Ignacio have kidnapped Shane.

Cesar negotiates a trade with Nancy: Shane for Stevie. Despite agreeing, Nancy meets Cesar with a crossbow hidden in a bassinet, then shoots Cesar in the leg. She receives a phone call from Ignacio, who unintentionally tells her about his run in with her three sons, Andy, and Doug at the local diner. When Nancy arrives there, she joins the group at the table and attempts to negotiate with Ignacio by holding a gun under the table. Ignacio calls her bluff - Shane then takes the gun. Ignacio reluctantly folds to Shane and parts with kind words for him. Now the Botwin family and Doug continue off-the-grid living according to Andy. During the flee, they stop at a carnival (much to Andy's disapproval). Andy and Silas enter a butter eating contest and Silas wins an RV, which they unfortunately cannot accept because of subsequent paperwork. They end up buying a church bus and traveling to an out-of-the-way trailer park. Andy and Doug pose as a preacher and assistant, taking appropriate donations. A frustrated Nancy goes to a bar and has sex with the bartender. The next day she finds out the bartender's wife is her neighbor and they are subsequently chased out of town.
